Case study: AI wellness platform that turns wearable, self-reported, and lab data into practices and product recommendations

AI wellness platform that turns wearable, self-reported, and lab data into practices and product recommendations

A wellness platform where customers record how they feel, connect their wearables, and add lab results (e.g., blood tests), building one profile per customer that updates as new data arrives. From the profile, an AI recommendation engine chooses practices, content, and products for each customer's week; sends daily reminders in-app and by email; tracks every purchase and refill; and asks whether each recommendation delivered the result the customer wanted. ThinkWeb built the platform to GDPR and HIPAA security and privacy requirements, fine-tuned the recommendation model, and supports it in production.

Advice that follows each customer's own data

The brand needed one profile per customer, built from several health data sources, that every recommendation could draw on.

The client is an EU wellness brand with nearly 20,000 customers. The brand sells supplements and other wellness products through its online store and reaches customers through its mobile app and email.

The brand's team brought the product vision, the content, and the expert knowledge behind the first recommendations. The product also needed a platform that could collect health and lifestyle data from several sources, keep it in one profile per customer, and turn each profile into recommendations.

ThinkWeb built the backend, data pipelines, a web portal for the brand's team, one for customers, and the production environment on AWS. It connected the platform to the brand's mobile app, the wearable data providers, the online store, and the email and marketing tools.

Three sources of data, one plan

Wearable data arrives automatically, while customers enter how they feel and their lab results. The brand's team decides which questions to ask and which customer groups receive them.

Record how they feel

Customers record their sleep, energy, mood, exercise, blood pressure, and well-being in the customer portal or in the app. The brand's team can create a new questionnaire and send it to a selected group of customers.

Connect a wearable

Customers connect their smartwatch or health app once. Pulse, blood oxygen, and sleep data then reach their profile automatically.

Add lab results

Customers enter results a wearable cannot measure, such as blood tests, and the results become part of their profile.

Follow the plan

The app shows each customer the practices planned for the coming days and when to do them, with a daily reminder. Email brings content, reminders, and progress updates.

Order and refill

Customers buy the suggested products in the brand's online store. The platform records each purchase, knows when a refill is due, and asks whether the product gave the result the customer wanted.

Recommendations built from each customer's profile and feedback

The platform uses each profile to choose the next practice, piece of content, or product, and each customer's answers shape what comes after.

Each profile holds what the customer reports, wearable data, lab results, purchases, and feedback, and it changes as new data arrives. The recommendation engine combines rule logic with AI-based recommendations. ThinkWeb built the rule logic, created the training sets, and fine-tuned the recommendation model. Together, the rules and the model select each customer's practices, content, and products, and predict what they'll likely need next.

Brand experts curated the data behind the first recommendations. In production, the platform makes its recommendations without any human intervention.

When a customer says whether a product or practice gave the result they wanted, the platform records the answer in their profile, so later recommendations use that data. The same profile holds their purchases and refill dates, keeping the brand's recommendations and online store on one record for each customer.

Sensitive data, handled to GDPR and HIPAA standards

Most of the brand’s customers are in the EU, with some in the US. Because they share biometrics and lab results, ThinkWeb built the platform to meet both GDPR and the HIPAA security and privacy requirements.

We needed a partner who could turn wearable data, lab results, and self-reported data into recommendations our customers can trust, while treating that health data with the care it deserves. ThinkWeb understood this from day one. When some of our early assumptions changed, they adapted quickly and helped us reshape the product rather than just build to the spec.
