Threeding – 3D Model Marketplace Rebuilt for Scale and Compliance

Threeding is a 3D model marketplace where individuals and businesses buy, sell, and share digital 3D assets. The company engaged us to rebuild the platform from the ground up and migrate all existing users, models, and transactions to a new, scalable infrastructure.

The original system had reached its limits. Manual moderation, payouts, and VAT reporting slowed down operations, while the legacy codebase made scaling and compliance difficult. The goal was to create a faster, more reliable marketplace that could grow without operational bottlenecks.

We designed a new architecture combining containerized microservices on AWS ECS with serverless functions for background processing using Lambda, SQS, and SNS. This hybrid setup allowed the platform to handle high traffic and heavy workloads efficiently while keeping maintenance and hosting costs predictable.

The new financial layer supports Stripe and PayPal for multi-currency payments, with configurable revenue-sharing models and manual payout approval for oversight. To comply with EU digital marketplace regulations, we built an automated VAT reporting system that tracks obligations per country and generates ready-to-file summaries.

To protect creators' intellectual property, we implemented a structured licensing model and a custom 3D preview engine. The engine generates simplified meshes of paid models, allowing secure interactive previews without exposing the original source files. Automated content pre-screening and admin moderation ensure consistent quality and compliance across listings.

The rebuilt platform delivers faster performance, simplified management, and long-term scalability. Hosted entirely on AWS, it provides the flexibility and reliability needed to support a global marketplace.
